Department of Teacher Education and Professional Development
I’m writing to invite you to a launch event for a literacy center here at Morgan State University, intended to support literacy outcomes for Baltimore youth. Morgan recently began a literacy center with University of Maryland College Park known as the Maryland Initiative for Literacy and Equity (MILE). Additional information about MILE is below:
To celebrate the start of this great endeavor, we are holding dual “Launch Events” at both campuses (UMD and Morgan State) on September 20th (UMD) from 4-6pm at the Riggs Alumni Center, and on September 25th 5-8pm on the campus of Morgan State University. We want to publicly thank all of those who contributed to this initiative especially the Deans and the administration as well as the multitude of faculty and staff that made this possible. At the Morgan State event, we will be showing the new documentary, “The Right to Read”, produced by Levar Burton, followed by a panel discussion with Kareem Weaver (NAACP Oakland), the former educator that the film centers around. In addition, your very own Heather Boles, will serve on a literacy panel immediately following the movie.
We hope that you will be able to join us for one or both events.
RSVP here for the September 25th launch on the campus of Morgan State University at Martin D. Jenkins Hall, Behavioral & Social Sciences Center, 1600 Havenwood Road, Baltimore, MD 21218
